Aritzo Off Road is an experience, a journey within a journey, to discover the wildest Sardinia, that of central Barbagia, like you’ve never seen it before. On board the iconic Buggy, the agile and compact car designed for venturing onto unconventional and rugged terrains, you’ll explore the Aritzo area: its flora, fauna, history, traditions, dense chestnut forests, as well as hazelnuts, lush woods, and numerous water sources, archaeology, ancient legends, and traditional crafts. The nature-immersive routes have a duration of about three hours.
One of the most scenic routes in the Aritzo area undoubtedly leads to the ancient Neviere or “domos de su nie” (ice houses): deep circular wells enclosed by dry stone walls where snow was stored and later collected during the summer, transformed into ice blocks, and then transported and sold across the rest of the island. With this ice, the people of Aritzo prepared “Carapigna,” a delicious predecessor of the ice cream we know today, made with ice, lemon, and sugar.
