Oristano between craftsmanship, nature and archaeology

The first day begins with a fascinating guided tour of the Nuraghe Losa Archaeological Park near Abbasanta. Nuraghe Losa is located in the central-western part of Sardinia and represents a significant example of Nuragic architecture, constructed with basalt blocks and characterized by a central tower, a trilobate bastion, and a defensive curtain wall. The site exhibits various construction phases, ranging from the early 15th century BC to the 7th-8th century AD, and has been inhabited for both residential and funerary purposes over the centuries. In the afternoon, you will visit the META_Ethnographic Museum of Abbasanta, which provides a representation of peasant and agro-pastoral life between 1500 and 1950, and the Antonio Gramsci House Museum in Ghilarza, where you can learn about the life and political commitment of this fundamental figure in Italian history. The house-museum offers a detailed exhibition on Antonio Gramsci’s life within an environment that preserves the intimacy and atmosphere of the place.

On the second day, you will head to Fordongianus to visit the Roman baths, among the most important in Sardinia. The baths are located in the “Forum Traiani” site and consist of two establishments, one from the 1st century AD, which used thermal waters at 54°C, and a second one from the 3rd century AD, featuring pools, tanks, and a sophisticated water distribution network. In the afternoon, you will move on to the archaeological site of Tharros, which encompasses over two thousand years of history, from Nuragic origins to the Roman era, with remains of temples, baths, necropolises, and roads.

On the last day, head to Cabras to visit the unmissable Giovanni Marongiu Civic Museum, whose exhibition covers the history of Sardinia, starting from the Prehistoric and Nuragic period with the Giants of Mont’e Prama, passing through the Roman period and including archaeological artifacts from the village of Cuccuru is Arrius and the Mal di Ventre Shipwreck, a Roman shipwreck. Spend the afternoon exploring the wonderful Sinis Peninsula, a unique area offering a variety of terrestrial and marine environments, with beaches, cliffs, salt flats, and rich marine life in the underwater depths. This area is a natural sanctuary for seabirds, turtles, and cetaceans, making it ideal for snorkeling and underwater photography thanks to the wrecks found in the depths.
