The Sulcis islands on foot

Welcome to Sulcis-Iglesiente, the historic Sardinian region with a long mining tradition and breathtaking landscapes. After a short transfer from Cagliari, the adventure begins in Portoscuso from where you will embark for Carloforte, a small town on the island of San Pietro. Carloforte has the peculiarity of being one of the two centers of Sulcis-Iglesiente where Tabarchino is spoken, a language that descends directly from the Genoese dialect. Once you arrive in Carloforte you will have the opportunity to walk at your leisure within the Island of San Pietro following the route of the Santa Barbara Mining Trail or the Santu Jacu Way.

On the second day you can decide whether to treat yourself to a day of relax or to continue exploring the island on foot along the route of the Tabarchino path (a variant of the Santu Jacu Way).

On the third day you will reach Calasetta, on the island of Sant’Antioco, the other center where Tabarchino is spoken. Here you will have the opportunity to take part in a wine tasting in a local winery to try the famous local wine. Alternatively, you can enjoy the magnificent beaches of this island or continue walking towards Sant’Antioco along the path of the Santu Jacu Way. The distance from Calasetta to Sant’Antioco on foot is about 14 km

On the fourth day, enjoy the island of Sant’Antioco on foot, doing a part of the Santu Jacu Way or relaxing on the beach. Not to be missed is the Bisso museum, a fiber derived from the Pinna Nobilis found in the surrounding sea which is woven only by Chiara Vigo to create unique works.

On the last day, take the Santa Barbara Mining Trail to get to Carbonia in 23.5 km, most of which following an old route of the Southern Sardinian Railways. Once you arrive in Carbonia you can decide whether to stay an extra day to visit the city and its mining heritage with the Coal Museum or return immediately to Cagliari with a direct transfer.
